Do you dread Monday mornings because a) you have a long commute to a draining job that’s killing you slowly, or b) you’re running your kids to practices and games all over the tri-state area from sunup to sundown? (And if you hear them call each other names one more time, you’re gonna stop this car!)
What if I told you there was a way to make your Monday mornings, commutes, and driving your adorable monsters around more fun? It’s called a podcast!
Obviously, podcasts are no secret. Based on studies by Nielsen and Edison, there are currently more than 700,000 podcasts with over 30 million episodes, which is 18.5 million more episodes than a year ago. In the U.S., 51% of the population has listened to a podcast. Most listening (49%) is done at home, while 22% is done while driving.
Podcasts have become a hot new way to entertain ourselves virtually anywhere. Maybe you could even create your own podcast about ways to stop kids from arguing!
The Rise of Podcasts
What makes podcasts so popular? Simply put, they provide entertainment in an easily accessible way. Most of us don’t have time to read a long article, but we can listen to the same story while we’re on our way to work, and we get to hear it narrated in a fun, conversational tone.
We all love to multitask. Reading while drinking our coffee. Watching TV while browsing Instagram. But, you can’t effectively choose which toothpaste to buy at the grocery store while binging Stranger Things. And that show while you’re driving? Well, you catch my drift. Because podcasts are audio only, you can multitask throughout your day while still being entertained.
There’s an elusive, magical feeling you get when you find a community of like-minded people after stumbling upon a podcast that speaks directly to you. (Hmm, where have I heard those words before?) And often, it’s the listeners who end up generating ideas for podcasts with their feedback, so relationship building is taking place.
Are Podcasts Today’s Talk Radio?
It’s not a far stretch to say podcasts are today’s talk radio. While all other modes of media fight for your attention, the audio-only nature and nostalgia of podcasts become their saving grace.
